Leeds MG car club as it was first named, was formed by Derek Burnell and a few other former members of Harrogate MG & cc 7 or 8 years ago. From a few members, some nights only Derek & Shirley were at the club night. But through those disheartening night's Derek kept heart and with the help of a small base of members the club has overtaken Harrogate in numbers of members. With over 120 and they about 90, this in part is due to our club being inclusive of all types of classic cars from the start. When I first joined the club my classic was a Mini 1000cc convertible I had built from a right off.

With the help of past and present committee members the club has evolved into what it is today. This evolution continues as we now have this web site so all who are interested in the club can have a look at what we are about before they join us.
Derek, Tony and Charles have driven the club forwards for the last few years, with Shirley & Gilley's support. Other club members who also have put in work in many different ways from selling of raffle tickets to donating prizes, organising there own runs in there local areas to supporting others . Stuart for the Web site ( all he wants in return is that we use it ). and Barry who has help join a lot of new members. We now have trips away two or 3 times and more a year. The club has a car show at Thwaites Mills in Leeds every year. We try and go to as many other shows as possible. The club that goes places.
I as the present chairman hope the main thing is our club is friendly and welcoming to all who we meet.   John Clayton (J.C.)

Dereks synopsis of the club :-

How did the club start ?
I started in the motor trade in the 1950s at a small garage servicing and repairing cars dating back to the 1920s.
I started my own garage business in 1963 before retiring 1998. From the 1970s i bought a few old cars when offered to me and in 1990 i sold 3 1920s vehicles and re-invested the money in ex-Californian (US) MGs and Triumphs and as time permitted i restored them all and sold a few on.
Around 1999 my wife Shirley and i joined a classic car club which was a disaster, the next one not much better. Then we found another club which was much better the only drawback was that it was a round trip of 35 miles to club nights which proved rather tiring.
In early 2003 we decided to form a Leeds based club. Having been in the motor trade for so long i had a few friends at local main dealerships one of whom was Peter Dickinson manager of fleet sales at Bristol St Motors (MG/Rover).
Then along with other main dealers exhibited cars at The Harewood Classic Car Show and they allowed me to park my 1976 MG Midget alongside their new cars.
Myself and Shirley made a billboard and some flyers, a few customers came forth with a little interest but nothing very fruitfull apart from one man by the name of John Clayton now known as JC. We chatted for sometime and after 1 year JC joined the club, not a man to make an instant decision.
Our first meeting was at The Beehive pub in Thorner in July 2003 and was attended by 8 people in total, and for my sins i was elected chairman,Maureen Goomes sec and Shirley treasurer.
Like all clubs and organisations we have had our ups and downs, and a club is only as good as its members. We are very fortunate to have people who support our club nights, lunch runs, shows and with their dedication we prosper.
Both Gilly and Charles Lister joined us in 2006 and became membership sec and events sec respectively along with Tony SPARKY Lucas mag editor. All 3 making an excellent contribution to the clubs success.
PATHFINDER Payne (Barrie) has become our roving ambassador, encouraging classic car owners to join the clan. With great success i may add.
Stuart Avison joined after the meeting the club gathering at Redbeck cafe near Wakefiled by chance one Sunday morning in gloomy January 09. He is now our webmaster dealing with all things technical !!!
John Clayton (JC) was elected chairman in 2007 when our meetings were held in Garforth due to the closure of The Beehive. John as led the club from the front again with great success.
LONG MAY WE PROSPER AS leedsmgccc
